The premise of the Vendée Globe is simple and widely understood: to sail round the world solo, non stop and without assistance.

To this day, the Vendée Globe is the only solo round-the-world yacht race with no stopping and no assistance.

The event followed in the wake of the Golden Globe, which in 1968 was the first circumnavigation of this type around the three capes (Good Hope, Leeuwin and Horn).

The distance covered is 40,075 kilometres or 21,638 miles, equivalent to the Earth’s circumference.

It starts from Les Sables d’Olonne in mid-autumn, followed by a journey to the heart of the Southern Ocean in the middle of the southern summer and a winter return to the Vendée.
